COYOTE ALERT

A Message from Boston Police District E-5

Dear residents,

 

The District E-5 Police would like to inform citizens of a recent incident involving a coyote.  On Sunday, June 13, 2010 officers from District 5 responded to a radio call to investigate premise on Garnet Rd. in West Roxbury.  Officers spoke to a home owner in the neighborhood who stated he found a dead cat on his front lawn.  Officers from animal control responded to the scene and, due to the manner in which the cat was found, determined that the cat had been killed by a coyote. 

 

Please be advised and inform neighbors of this recent incident.  Please read the following safety tips and be cautious when letting pets outside.  As always, please call 9-1-1 in any case of an emergency.

 

Safety Tips:

·        Fence pet and animal enclosures completely, if possible include a top.

·        Keep cats and small dogs indoors. When walking small dogs, always keep them on a leash.

·        Coyotes are most active dusk to dawn. Avoid walking pets after dark.

·        Feed pets indoors. Eliminate potential food and water sources such as fallen fruit or vegetables and standing water.

·        Store trash in covered, heavy-duty containers.

·        Keep yards free of potential hiding places. Remove thick brush and weeds. Enclose the bottoms of porches and decks.

·        If you encounter a coyote that behaves aggressively, you have probably gotten too close to its prey or its family. Try to scare the coyote by yelling and waving your arms. Throw rocks, sticks or other objects. Do not turn away and run.

·        Do not feed coyotes. Doing so can make them less afraid of humans and potentially more dangerous.

Fun for the kitty in your life

With the arrival of the warmer weather, a young kitty's fancies turn to thoughts of the great outdoors. Kitty sits by the window sill staring at the birdies busily building nests and at the squirrels running by on the fence. Kitty may drool or growl or purr or flip out at these sites. Kitty wants out!!!

Trouble is, we all know it's not a great idea to let kitties wander outside, especially in urban areas, and especially with the ever closer presence of critters like coyotes as well.

What to do, what to do?

Well providing your kitty with some climbing and scratching activity is a great thing to do. It gives your pal mental and physical stimulation and may help your furniture survive longer too.

Panda does PTown

Panda took her first trip to Provincetown for the summer of 2010. The weather turned out to be lovely despite the prediction of rain. She enjoyed her time at the dog park and beach though it did turn out that she had a tremendous belly ache later in the evening from consuming too much sand and sea water. She made little and not so little sand castles from both ends for a while...but she feels much better now, thank you for asking.

To Let You All Know...

As of June 1st, giant corporation Proctor and Gamble has officially purchased pet food manufacturer Natura. Natura, as many of you know, is the maker of such products as California Natural, Innova, Healthwise, and Evo dog and cat foods. These brands have always been of very high quality and have fed very nicely to many pets over the years.
Though Natura insists that product quality will not be compromised as a result of this merger, we at The Pet Cabaret will carefully scrutinize and monitor product quality in the coming months.
As always, we will search for and bring in new foods that we feel are of high quality, are reasonably priced, and made in a verifiable manner. For now, we'll all just wait to see what happens.

National Bite Prevention Week

National Dog Bite Prevention Week

 

May 16th was the beginning of National Bite Prevention Week.  We'd like to give you some tips on how to help prevent dog bites in households with children.

 

Kids are usually more susceptible to receive the brunt of bad behavior since young children often are not able to control a dog and behave in ways that intensify predatory motor functions. Young kids run around a lot and squeal, this coupled with the fact that they are seldom involved in training makes it very difficult in some circumstances for dogs to see them as anything other than toys.

 

Here are some special precautions to take when you have kids in the household:

 

• Take the time to socialize, exercise and train your dog.
• Really get to know your dog.  Anticipating stressful cues your dog may be giving you will allow you to take him away from stressful situations that may have led to a bite.
• Avoid leaving your children alone with your dog. 
• Do not allow your children near the dog when he is eating, chewing on a bone, playing with a toy, or near anything of high value to him.
• Do not allow your child to walk the dog. An adult should always have physical control of the dog when he‘s being walked.
• Do not allow your children to hug the dog.
• Teach your children how to play nice with the dog so they don‘t pull on the dog‘s ears or tail. Do not run around or wrestle with a dog. A good rule of thumb is to make sure a toy is always involved when children are playing with the dog so that the play is directed at something other than body parts. Of course, you want to make sure the dog doesn't get possessive with his toys before doing this. 

 

Taking these steps will help your dog and kids live happily ever after just like these underdogs that got their second chance for a happy life.

OK kids, due to popular demand, and a great newly expanded staff, we will now be open on Mondays beginning May 17th, 2010.

This means that our hours will look like this for the week:

Monday through Friday - 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM

Saturday                       - 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Sunday                         - 12:00 PM - 5: 00 PM

We hope that this helps everyone out that says they always run out of dog/cat/bird/hamster food on a Sunday night.

2 Million Dogs/2 Dogs 2000 Miles Fundraiser

Sadly cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs. For the past two years Luke Robinson and his two Great Pyrenees dogs, Hudson and Murphy, have been walking across the US in an attempt to raise awareness of canine and human cancer.

On June 19th,2010, Luke and his dogs will walk their final mile into Boston.They'll also kick off a fundraiser for called the Puppy Up! Party and Auction.

Proceeds from this event will be used to help educate people about and invest in comparative oncology studies.

The Pet Cabaret will be donating to this event how 'bout you kids?

Opening Mondays...soon

OK kids starting on MONDAY, MAY 17th, 2010, we will be open on Mondays. Since our opening in 2003, we've been closed on Mondays, needing at least a day off to do laundry and food shop. 

But now we have a great staff and look forward to serving your pets seven days a week. Remember, open Mondays starting on MAY 17th!

 

 

Shoo Tags Good!

OK kids, in our never ending quest to bring you safe, chemical free, and effective flea control we have taken in the Shoo Tag.

The Shoo Tag looks like a baby credit card that emits electromagnetic frequencies to keep creepy, crawly pests away.  The Shoo Tag lasts for four months or more and again, is safe to use and chemical free.

We have always had really good success with our herbal repellent sprays and chemical free tags, and we have heard very good reports on the Shoo Tag from pals in Florida, California, and on the Cape.

Please, please, stop using the toxic stuff and switch your pets to something chemical free.

The National Resources Defense Council has issued a paper entitled "Poisons on Pets II". 

In it are details regarding the hazardous nature of the chemicals used in the manufaturing of spot on flea and tick treatments and flea collars.

Moose Antlers from Maine

OK, now we have these totally spiffy, naturally shed moose antler chews for pups in the store. When faced with the decision to choose moose or deer antler, Panda chose moose, a ringing endorsement as far as we are concerned ! They're from Maine, gathered by a real human being who answers his own phone!

OK kids, starting on Wednesday, March 10 we'll offering dog, cat, and small animal nail clipping at The Pet Cabaret, 4404 Washington St, in lovely Roslindale.

You will need to book an appointment with Valerie, our nail clipper in residence. You can call the store at 617-323-7387 to do that. 

The times available are from 3 PM to 6:45 PM.

Cost for services will be as follows and are subject to change:

Ear Clean          - $15

You will need to provide PAPERWORK from the vet or shelter indicating that you have a current rabies vaccination. (this is not our fault...)

We're a "Pick of the Litter"

OK, so we're apologize for blowing our own horn here but we're excited that we were chosen Boston Magazine's "Pick of the Litter" for pet supply stores in Boston. This is part of their Ruff Guide in the March 2010 issue.

This came as a really pleasant surprise to us and we thank all of the survey participants and Boston magazine editors that voted for us. 

We think this that is yet another thing  makes Roslindale officially cool.

Please, please contact your state reps TODAY. Encourage them to support House Bill #344, the bill to BAN DEVOCALIZATION of dogs. This stuff has got to stop.

Coming Soon....lovely nails from The Pet Cabaret

One of the most frequent requests we get at the store is for pet nail trimming and care.
So starting early in March we will be offering that service here at the store. 
We will get back to you on the exact date as soon as we know it.

Valerie Kofkoff will be providing the services which will include nail clips, nail grinds, and paw care for dogs, cats, and small animals. Valerie has had over six years experience in animal care and handling so she can handle pretty much anything. We like that. 


Call us soon to check on the dates and come in to welcome Valerie when she is in.


On another note, talented artist Jamie Maxfield just completed this wonderful portrait of our dear little Panda. We love it. Jamie will also be at the store in the future so keep your eyes and ears peeled for that as well.

In this talk, Board-Certified Behavior Analyst Terri will focus on the analysis part
of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA is the science that arose from the experimental analysis of behavior and will teach how to assess and analyze
the causes and consequences of behavior in a systematic fashion.

Product Recall

There's a recall of Merrick Beef Filet Squares with a package date of “Best By 111911” because the product may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The Pet Cabaret has checked each package of this product in our store and none of our product is from this suspect lot.

Oh this inventory thing is making us more mental than we already are. We know it is a good thing to do, but so mind numbing...yet meditative as well.

Winter Goodies

Hi kids,

Despite the mildness of the weather, we all know it's still going to get cold and the holidays are still coming.

Right now we have a very nice selection of dog coats in all sizes and many different patterns. We won't be reordering them for this season so come by and pick one up now in order to avoid doggie disappointment later.

We also have a really fun bunch of holiday gift bundles in the store, all very reasonably priced. Just think how your cat or dog would feel if they arrived at a holiday party without a hostess gift in paw; it would probably scar them emotionally...for life...just a thought.

Well, we had a wonderful day last Sunday for our annual Holiday Pet Photo Day. We turned our self serve into a photo studio for the day filling it with fake snow, a toboggan, and crazy looking ornaments.

Amazingly, we had no "yellow snow" incidendents.

What we did have was a lot of fun and laughs. We also got fabulous pictures thanks to Carol's patience and talent.

Photographer Carol Lundeen will be doing the honors this year.

Carol will be taking appointments throughout the day.

It'll cost $30.00 and you will walk away with a 4 X 6 photo of your pet.

Carol will also be offering other photo ordering options including holiday card printing.

Picasso visits The Pet Cabaret

Well, lovely fourteen year old African Grey parrot,
Picasso had his mom, Liz drive him into
The Pet Cabaret for a visit today.
There was a good deal of activity in the
shop at the time so Picasso regurgitated a
few times because he was a touch overly excited.
No big deal, it happens to all of us.




Though store kitty Giacomo has seen birds before,
he has never seen one quite like Picasso, so he was
more than a little interested in the avian guest.
He even took time off from his busy sleeping schedule
to ensure that Picasso had a satisfying visit.





Here is a shot of Giacomo trying desperately to ignore
his guest. Mom Liz is making sure that Picasso's feelings
are not hurt by the snub.
Picasso left the store with a bag full of toys and a little less
food in his belly. He also left with an ability to imitate the
sound of the scanning gun of our cash registers and we hope,
good memories of his visit to The Pet Cabaret.

Organic Pumpkin and Sweet Potato

As many of you know organic sweet potatoes and canned pumpkin make a wonderful addition to pet diets. These foods add healthful fiber and antioxidants to a diet as well as generous amounts of Vitamin A.

We often recommend the addition of sweet potato or pumpkin when pets are experiencing a belly upset or are trying to knock off a few pounds.

So now we have it right here in the store. We have brought in Nummy Tum Tum organic canned pumpkin and sweet potato. Nummy Tum Tum pumpkin and sweet potato are organically grown and canned in the U.S. so you can be sure of their quality.

Drop by the store and grab some for your pal, and to help you figure out what to do with it, here is a recipe for doggie treats using Nummy Tum Tum.

Nummy Tum Tum™ Dog Treats

Use Pure Pumpkin and Pure Sweet Potato to make super-nutritious dog treats!

• 2 eggs
• 1/2 cup Nummy Tum Tum™ puree
• 1 tablespoon cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 2 tablespoons dry milk
• 2 1/2 cups flour
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• water

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Mix together eggs and puree; add salt, cinnamon, dry milk, and flour.
3. Add vanilla, then add water until the dough is dry and crumbly but workable.
4. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface, 1/2" thick. Cut into desired treat shapes.
5. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet about 1" apart.
6. Bake for 20 minutes, then turn treats over and bake another 20 minutes.

Show and Tail Day with Underdog ResQ

So on Saturday august 15th, we be hosting the very nice people from Underdog ResQ for Show and Tail Day.
This is a great group of volunteers working really hard to save dogs often viewed as "unsuitable" for other rescues.
This will be a chance to meet some of the fine folks of Underdog and some pooches as well.

We'll also have the lovely and talented folks from Stella and Chewy's on board that day to tell us about their fine raw and freeze dried raw foods and answer any questions you may have about the benefits of raw feeding.

Vacation update

So yesterday's strange happening involved a small crab at the beach.
I suffered a violet sneak attack to a toe while walking in the water.
The crab was tiny but mighty and was not playing fair at all. (Sneak attack indeed...)
I fought off the attack valiantly and neither party endured a life threatening injury.
Thought you'd like to know.

Some very sad news

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce
the passing of our dear dog Mary.
Mary was so very much a part of our lives and
the lives of many of our customers.
She was with us at the store all day, every day and
had her own little fan club.

Panda's back

Hi everyone,

Panda is out of the hospital and back home. She is weak, but getting better. She was diagnosed with Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis (HGE), a VERY dangerous condition that the vets at MSPCA Angell fortunately picked up on right away. Time is of the essence in treating this condition so we were extremely lucky that they were on top on things.

We'll be talking about this condition in the near future since it is rather mysterious and can be fatal.

In the meantime, we'd like to thank the folks at the MSPCA for all their care and fine work. Panda was seen and well treated by Dr. Marie Chartier, Dr. Faith Buckley, and Dr. Vicky Yang. Many, many thanks to you all.

Additional thanks to all the vet techs in critical care that kept such a loving eye on our little pup.

A Heads Up on a Good Thing...

Hi kids,

Just want to give you a heads up on a really good thing being in done in Roslindale for soldiers, veterans, and their families.

On June 15th, from 4 - 7 PM, at 16 Cohasset Street in Roslindale, acupuncturist, Karen Kirchoff and Reiki Master, Kim Ecevido will host the Veterans Acupuncture and Reiki Benfit Project.

Karen and Kim are doing this in recognition of some of the challenges faced by soldiers, Vets, and their loved ones. Acupuncture and Reiki can help relieve symptoms of pain, stress, insomnia, and PTSD.

The cost is on a sliding scale basis from $25-$45.00. Additional donations welcomed.

Save the Boston Park Rangers' Horses

It has been publicly stated that the horses used by the Park Rangers of the Boston Park Department will be eliminated due to budget cuts. We respectfully oppose this action. The horses greatly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Park Rangers. The elimination of the Boston Park Department horses will adversely decrease public safety in the parks of the City of Boston.

* Eliminating the horses will dramatically reduce the ability of the Park Rangers to patrol the large park system especially the wooded areas where vehicles cannot go.

* Eliminating the horses will dramatically reduce the ability of the Park Rangers to patrol the large park system when there is a heavy snowfall.

* The horses are extremely vital for crowd safety control at parades and demonstrations.

* Rangers mounted on horses are six feet higher and can see over larger areas in urban crowds looking for lost children or in forests looking for lost hikers.

* Rangers mounted on horses can hear cries for help and assistance over large distances better then in patrol vehicles with engine noise and lower height.

* Rangers mounted on horses are an important friendly visible face of public safety assurance and assistance for both residents and tourists in the City of Boston.

* Horse mounted units cannot be easily reinstated because it takes years to train horses plus develop the trust between the individual ranger and individual horse.

We petition Mayor Thomas Menino, Boston City Council and Boston Parks Department Commissioner Antonia Pollak to keep the horses used by the Park Rangers to efficiently and effectively ensure the parks are safe for all the citizens of Boston and visitors from around the world.

Big Shrimpy Beds, sold at The Pet Cabaret are great beds. They're tough and attractive.They're thoroughly washable inside and out. They're not cheap but they last a long time and are worth the investment.

A little update then

We're back from vacation where all went well but I think we're feeling as though we never left. Forgive us if we seem a touch crazier than usual.

Oh, the plane thing...the one about the other plane using the "other runway". Well, turns out the other pilot DID NOT get the "use the other runway" memo.

So here's what happened - the pilot, as I mentioned previously, tells us to "pay no attention" to the other plane that we may see on the right side of the plane.

OK then, fair enough, I think, he knows it's there, so I should refrain from any back seat driving.

We begin our descent towards the runway which I am happily watching on the little mappy thing that Virgin so thoughtfully provides on the screen on the seat in front of me. I am watching our descent, watching the numbers go down...we are at 2000 feet, 1000 feet, 500 feet, 161 feet....523 feet!

Weeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Up we go again! Really, really UP! Like in a straight line kinda 90 degree angle kinda up... kinda just a tad too rapidly for most people's taste kinda up...

The cabin of the plane falls eerily silent. Randy, Lisa S's brother and one of our traveling companions, turns and shoots me a look which causes me to laugh hysterically and of course, probably utterly inappropriately.

I avoid looking at the other Lisa at all costs. She is, suffice it to say, not a good flyer.

The guy next to me hasn't let go of my arm yet.

The other Lisa announces that if we smell something questionable in the cabin in the next few minutes, it is probably coming from her.

The pilot gets on the intercom and tells us that the other pilot was "disoriented" and that we would be using another runway on our second approach to SFO.

I wish like Hell that I could hear the conversation in the cockpit. You know it's a good one.
