Change is in the air

The weather's been changing so we have definitely noticed a change in what people are picking up at the store. Lots of doggie coats and sweaters have been snapped up and on Saturday Buddy the poodle came in fully decked out in her sweater and top coat. She's small and it was on the cool side. She pulled it off well.

Buddy's mom selected a set of blue Muttluks to go along with the rest Buddy's ensemble. She looked pretty stunning and was nonchalant about having booties on her paws. I know the boots seem crazy to many people but with all the salt and chemicals that are spread on the road in the winter here in Boston, the poor dogs suffer like crazy unless their paws are protected. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Also, Nina the Dachshund/Terrier mix and her mom Lucy, (an excellent singer songwriter http://www.lucymartinez.com/)
picked up a sensible fleece lined red number to help little Nina stay warm on her walks. Nina looked great and wore the outfit out. Not sure if Nina will do booties this year, she's only about 8"-9" tall and on the older side. She doesn't do well in the snow.

Cat people have been laying in supplies of new indoor toys and the catnip has started to fly as well. Everyone says that their kitties go a touch stir crazy when the weather changes even if they are indoor cats. Animals are so much more in touch with what is going on in the natural world than we are.

Howl-o-ween Weekend

So we are getting ready to have our second annual Howl-o-ween Weekend celebration. It'll be held on Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30.

Last year's was great fun because people were really creative in costuming their pets. It's amazing how sweet and cooperative the pets were considering they were dressed in bizarre outfits and being giggled at. They will truly do just about anything for us, won't they?

This year we will have a professional pet photographer on hand to take pet portraits. She'll be printing out instant digital prints and all the money from these portraits will be donated to local animal shelters. We encourage people to come by and take advantage of this opportunity. Many thanks to photographer Chris McLay for being so generous with her time and energy.

Just in case you need a little more incentive to visit us that weekend, we should let you know that any pet showing up in the slightest hint of a costume will be given a coupon for a free small bag of food. Most of our food manufacturers do participate in this offer, so it's a nice opportunity to try out a new food or add to Fido's stash.

Anyhoo...hope to see all of you soon.

Da rain....

We are pretty sick of the rain right now. It's been raining without let up for a few days. Still, we know we have it easy compared to the people in the South and in New Hampshire that got nailed with flooding...but ya know, we can complain just a little...

The dogs are all stir crazy 'cause their walks are being cut short. But Mary and Marley both hate the rain anyway. They can literally turn themselves off when it is bad out. Remarkable really...

We're back

So we're back from a pet industry trade show in Chicago. Interesting places, these trade shows. We always see lots of fascinating people and things. It truly does take all kinds, and that, mostly is a good thing I think.

Anyway, I also think that being at the trade show and seeing the enormous variety of products out there just deepened our committment to only bring in excellent quality foods and products.

It seems that all the big companies are trying to jump on the "natural" pet foods band wagon, but to us, their efforts seem disingenuous at best. They've made inferior quality pet foods for years caring only for profit margins and not animals. Now, as more and more people are switching to better quality foods, they feel the need to exploit this "niche". Too little, too late we think. Why trust them now?

On a happier note, there are some new fun products out there - toys, treats, and foods, so drop by the store when you can and take a look around at some of the things we brought back.

I think I like this blogging thing.
