Changes at Side Show

We want to wish all the best to trainer Dot Baisly of Dot's Doggie Dojo. She has just landed a new position in New York City working, of course, with dogs. This is a great move for Dot and we are sure she'll do beautifully in her new position. Good luck Dot!!!!

In the meantime, we are working on putting together a comprehensive group of training classes at Side Show that we are sure you'll enjoy and want to participate in. We're preparing those classes for early in 2012 as well as some other events at Side Show.

Keep your eyes on this blog and our our Facebook and Web sites for updated information.

Odds and Ends

Training continues on at Side Show and we'll be starting a new Mastering Adolescence class on Sunday, Oct. 30. This is a 4 week class running from 1:30 to 2:30 pm. The class is designed to help you and your adolescent dog communicate and FOCUS. We have a couple of spaces left for the class.

Speaking of a couple of spaces left, we have just a couple of spaces left for our ever popular Holiday Pet Photo Shoot with photographer Carol Lundeen.
The shooting days are Sat. Nov.5th and Sat.Nov. 19th.
This is a wonderful chance to get a professional portrait of your pet for the very reasonable price of $30. Always a fun and enjoyable event.

While we're on the subject of both the holidays and training, we'd like to let you know about a short class that trainer Dot Baisly will be offering a Side Show.
It is called Holiday Prep School and is designed to help you and your perhaps not always perfectly behaved pet how to get ready for the parties, dinners, and in-laws.
Starts 11/20 -12/4 for 3 wks. Sundays, 2:30-3:30pm.

Call The Pet Cabaret at 617-323-7387 to sign up for any or all of these fabulous happenings.

Occupy Main Street

"Star of the Day" Adoptions at The Pet Cabaret

In our ongoing efforts to try and help some animals find forever homes, we are starting an adoption event at Side Show at The Pet Cabaret. It's called "Star of the Day" and at least initially, we'll be focusing some of our efforts on animals that have had a bit of a tough time finding a permanent placement. Often through no fault of their own, these pets find themselves homeless. Their own may have died or lost their home. Some owners decide that they "just don't have time" for their pets anymore.

Such is the case with our first "Star of the Day", Cooper. After a rough start in Tennessee where he was found abandoned, starved, and full of fleas Cooper was adopted by a family in Boston. There he quickly bonded with the children and adults of the home. Up for anything, he loved to hang out with other dogs and go on hikes. He also loved to snuggle and sleep for hours on his bed. Sadly, this family that used to love him no longer feels that they have time for him.

Cooper is between 4-5 years old and weighs about 55 pounds. He is healthy, house trained, and knows basic obedience. He is friendly with adults, children of all ages, other dogs, and cats. He displays no food or toy aggression and is generally quiet unless a squirrel runs across his path. Overall his foster home considers Cooper a "low maintenance guy" and feels he would do well as a single dog in a home or with other dogs/cats. This is one really great dog that deserves another chance.

Our first "Star of the Day" event will be held this coming Saturday, October 29th, from
1:00 pm to 2:45 pm. It will be held at Side Show at The Pet Cabaret,4404 Washington St., Roslindale, MA. Come and meet Cooper for yourself!

Tidbits - New Stuff and More

We have a lovely new food in the store, K9 Naturals. It's a freeze dried raw product out of New Zealand, available in beef or lamb. A one pound bag, after re-hydration, yields a little better than 4 pounds of food.
It's an excellent product for the picky, detoxing, or recovering dog. It also receives a 5 out of 5 star rating on Dog Food Advisor.
Panda is loving it and she is a tough critic.
Let's see, what else...we're getting on one of our clean up tears so you should drop by the store and what's on sale...you never know what we'll do when we're in one of these moods.

Sincere Condolences

Our heartfelt condolences to our friend Sarah on the loss of her wonderful, gentle dog Weasel earlier this year. They were a marvelous duo and lovely white Weasel will be sorely missed.

Deep condolences as well to our pal Jodi on the loss of her dear, gentle Dora the bulldog. Dora passed away suddenly this past weekend.

Both Dora and Weasel were fortunate to have had such wonderful and caring humans. They knew how lucky they were and showed their gratitude in their behavior.

We are so sorry for both of you on your losses. We know what it feels like to lose such trusted and faithful friends.

WANTED: 40 GOOD DOGS and OWNERS!

Customers of The Pet Cabaret know that we are always interested in gentle, effective alternative veterinary treatments for our foot footed pals. Two of our favorite treatment modalities are acupuncture and acupressure. We, through personal experience, and many of our customers as well, have found these treatments to be enormously helpful to their pets.

Naturally then, we were very excited when we heard that one of our favorite animal acupuncturists, Claire McManus, was working with a small local company developing a new acupressure product for dogs with pain or stiffness due to arthritis, injuries, or other joint and mobility problems.

This company is in the final stages of development of the product and they are  looking for dogs to test it
They need about 40 dogs (and owners), to test this acupressure product. It is totally non-invasive and clips onto their dog's collar for about one week.

Dog owners will be asked to fill out a short survey before and after using the collar. In return for participating in the trials owners will be given a $50 gift card to The Pet Cabaret.

They need dogs who are 25 lbs or larger and who have some challenges to their mobility and energy; for example difficulty getting up stairs or into car or stiffness / arthritis, limping after exercise etc.

Those interested can contact Claire directly a mcmanusacupuncture@mac.comPlease include your  mailing address and phone number, name and age of dog in your email. Testing will begin in mid-May.

WELLPET VOLUNTARILY RECALLS CANNED CAT FOOD

This is a copy of the letter that Wellpet LLC submitted to
us regarding the recall of their canned cat food

February 28, 2011
WELLPET LLC VOLUNTARILY RECALLS
CERTAIN LOTS OF CANNED CAT FOOD
No Other Lots, Products or Dates Affected
Dear WellPet Customer,

Recent testing on lots of our Wellness® canned cat food products has indicated that specific lots of these products might contain less than adequate levels of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1). While this is an isolated incidence, we have taken additional steps in our manufacturing process to ensure that this does not happen again.

Cats fed only these products over time could be at risk for developing thiamine deficiency. Although the risk for thiamine deficiency is remote, we are taking the extra precaution of voluntarily removing these products from store shelves. We are asking for the return of the following products:

·         Wellness Canned Cat Food (all flavors and sizes) with “BEST BY” dates from 14APR13 through 30SEP13

·         Wellness Canned Cat Food Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with a “BEST BY” date of 10NOV13 and 17NOV13.

We are asking consumers to contact Stericycle ExpertRECALL directly if they believe they have the recalled product. Consumers will receive reimbursement by calling the recall hotline at
(877) 227-9587.

At WellPet, our mission is to deliver the most nutritious, natural pet food and snacks. We greatly appreciate your assistance in this matter and your continued support of the Wellness brand.

If you receive any consumer inquiries regarding the voluntary recall before you receive your mailing, please contact Stericycle ExpertRECALL at (877) 227-9587.

Animal Massage Lecture at Side Show

We want to let you know that Jody Garland, a certified small animal massage therapist, will be doing a freeclecture on Sunday, January 23rd at 1:00PM.

First let us tell you that a "small animal" in the world of animal massage is really just about anything smaller than a horse. Cats, birds, lizards, small dogs, large dogs can all benefit greatly from massage. Massage can boost the immune system, increase mobility, offer support to joints, and reduce the effects of anxiety and stress.

Jody will be explaining the benefits and uses of animal massage and answering any questions you may have about it.

Jody will also be booking animal massage sessions in our new space, Side Show.

We will be offering a $5.00 off coupon for those booking their first massage with Jody at Side Show.

This will be an enjoyable and informative lecture. Please call or come by the store to sign up for it.

Developments at Side Show

Some of you have noticed our new space at the store; we're calling it "Side Show".

Many of you have asked,

"Hey, what are you doing next door?"

Well, we're looking for that space to be a place where humans and pets can learn things. We'd love to introduce humans to different types of gentle, alternative pet care.

We'd like to introduce dogs to the pleasure of a jog on the treadmill and a massage.

We'd like for both people and pets to see the benefits of good nutrition.

We'd like the space to become a place where adoptable pets can be matched with a new home.

We'd like the space to develop into a place where people can explore different topics in a variety of ways.

Forgive us if this sounds a little vague right now, but give us a bit of time to make things come together, we think you might like the results.
