Back to School for Puppy too!

Hi All!

We just want to let you know that we are truly happy with the way that training is going at Side Show. Trainer Trisha Dunphy is wonderful and best of all, is getting real, repeatable results.

We can help start your puppy out the right way with our Puppy Play and Learn A Lot class and keep her pursuing her canine scholarly career with our basic and more advanced classes.

Try out some training at The Pet Cabaret - you'll be glad you did!

To get the right start we recommend that you first do a "20/20 Look" with our trainer, Trisha Dunphy. The "20/20" consults are private 20 minute evaluation sessions for the tiny cost of $20.00. Trisha is also available for private sessions and home-based lessons.

"Puppy Play and Learn A Lot" (A Pre-School Level Class) - 4 weeks - $150
New classes beginning - ongoing  - Saturdays, 11:45 AM - 12:45 PM
This introductory class is all about your pup (to 6 months of age) and the information you need as a puppy parent. The sessions will emphasize socialization and new experiences in an appropriate atmosphere. You'll learn about reading your pup's body language along with such basic cues as sit, down, and to come when called. Other behaviors such as chewing and jumping will be addressed as will house training. A great time to bond with your pup and get your family involved! Classes do NOT have to be used consecutively.

"I'm a Big Dog Now" (Basic Obedience) (Level 1 class) - 7 weeks - $200
Thursdays, 6:30 - 7:30 PM, starting Sept.13
Saturdays, 10:30 - 11:30 AM, starting Sept.29
Wednesdays, 6:30 - 7:30 PM, starting Oct.3
Wednesdays, 7:30 - 8:30 PM, starting Oct.24

A secondary puppy class teaching further socialization and correct behavior to puppies. For older dogs too as a brush up course. Especially appropriate for "new to you" rescue dogs. Basic obedience will be emphasized in this course. We'll introduce focus and control. A definite building block class. For pups 6 months and older. This really is a great class for dogs of any age!

"I Used to be a Good Dog" (Revisiting Obedience) (Level 1 class) - 7 weeks - $200
Thursdays, 7:30 - 8:30 PM, starting Sept.13
Saturdays, 1:30 - 2:30 PM, starting Sept.15

Our most popular class, this is for the adolescent or older dog who just isn't  what s/he used to be, or maybe never quite was. Perhaps she's stopped listening to you or perhaps he gets back to you at some point when you call him. Focus, control, distractions, discipline, and fun will be emphasized in this class. Get your dog back on track with this fun and educational class.

"But Wait, There’s More"- Advanced Obedience (Level 2 class) - 6 weeks - $200
Saturdays, 1:30 - 2:30 PM, starting Oct.20

So you and your dog have completed a basic obedience class, now what? This class is a natural progression from your first basic obedience experience. In this class we’ll introduce distractions, mastering existing cues and learning new advanced cues. In other words we’ll make sure your dog will listen to you “in the real world”.This will be a fun and creative learning experience for you and your graduate dog!
Your dog must have completed either a Basic Obedience or a Refresher Obedience course at The Pet Cabaret or receive permission of the trainer to enroll.

"Star of the Day" Adoptions at The Pet Cabaret

In our ongoing efforts to try and help some animals find forever homes, we are starting an adoption event at Side Show at The Pet Cabaret. It's called "Star of the Day" and at least initially, we'll be focusing some of our efforts on animals that have had a bit of a tough time finding a permanent placement. Often through no fault of their own, these pets find themselves homeless. Their own may have died or lost their home. Some owners decide that they "just don't have time" for their pets anymore.

Such is the case with our first "Star of the Day", Cooper. After a rough start in Tennessee where he was found abandoned, starved, and full of fleas Cooper was adopted by a family in Boston. There he quickly bonded with the children and adults of the home. Up for anything, he loved to hang out with other dogs and go on hikes. He also loved to snuggle and sleep for hours on his bed. Sadly, this family that used to love him no longer feels that they have time for him.

Cooper is between 4-5 years old and weighs about 55 pounds. He is healthy, house trained, and knows basic obedience. He is friendly with adults, children of all ages, other dogs, and cats. He displays no food or toy aggression and is generally quiet unless a squirrel runs across his path. Overall his foster home considers Cooper a "low maintenance guy" and feels he would do well as a single dog in a home or with other dogs/cats. This is one really great dog that deserves another chance.

Our first "Star of the Day" event will be held this coming Saturday, October 29th, from
1:00 pm to 2:45 pm. It will be held at Side Show at The Pet Cabaret,4404 Washington St., Roslindale, MA. Come and meet Cooper for yourself!

Come One, Come All to Side Show!

Training at Side Show this week - a "Back to Basics" obedience class starts this Sunday, July 10. It will run from 2:30 to 3:30 for six weeks. This is a great course for those pooches who have "forgotten" or never quite had basic obedience under their doggie belts.Think sit, stay, loose leash walking, coming when called type stuff.

Starting next week, July 24th, at Side Show, "Mastering Adolescence", a four week class that runs from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm on Sundays. This class is about helping the "teenaged" dog to develop focus and control...maybe even learn some manners.
Both you and the pooch will be glad you did this class.

Call the shop to sign up for either or both of these wunnerful classes each taught by Dot Baisly of Dot's Doggie Dojo.

Tidbits - New Stuff and More

We have a lovely new food in the store, K9 Naturals. It's a freeze dried raw product out of New Zealand, available in beef or lamb. A one pound bag, after re-hydration, yields a little better than 4 pounds of food.
It's an excellent product for the picky, detoxing, or recovering dog. It also receives a 5 out of 5 star rating on Dog Food Advisor.
Panda is loving it and she is a tough critic.
Let's see, what else...we're getting on one of our clean up tears so you should drop by the store and what's on sale...you never know what we'll do when we're in one of these moods.

WANTED: 40 GOOD DOGS and OWNERS!

Customers of The Pet Cabaret know that we are always interested in gentle, effective alternative veterinary treatments for our foot footed pals. Two of our favorite treatment modalities are acupuncture and acupressure. We, through personal experience, and many of our customers as well, have found these treatments to be enormously helpful to their pets.

Naturally then, we were very excited when we heard that one of our favorite animal acupuncturists, Claire McManus, was working with a small local company developing a new acupressure product for dogs with pain or stiffness due to arthritis, injuries, or other joint and mobility problems.

This company is in the final stages of development of the product and they are  looking for dogs to test it
They need about 40 dogs (and owners), to test this acupressure product. It is totally non-invasive and clips onto their dog's collar for about one week.

Dog owners will be asked to fill out a short survey before and after using the collar. In return for participating in the trials owners will be given a $50 gift card to The Pet Cabaret.

They need dogs who are 25 lbs or larger and who have some challenges to their mobility and energy; for example difficulty getting up stairs or into car or stiffness / arthritis, limping after exercise etc.

Those interested can contact Claire directly a mcmanusacupuncture@mac.comPlease include your  mailing address and phone number, name and age of dog in your email. Testing will begin in mid-May.

Developments at Side Show

Some of you have noticed our new space at the store; we're calling it "Side Show".

Many of you have asked,

"Hey, what are you doing next door?"

Well, we're looking for that space to be a place where humans and pets can learn things. We'd love to introduce humans to different types of gentle, alternative pet care.

We'd like to introduce dogs to the pleasure of a jog on the treadmill and a massage.

We'd like for both people and pets to see the benefits of good nutrition.

We'd like the space to become a place where adoptable pets can be matched with a new home.

We'd like the space to develop into a place where people can explore different topics in a variety of ways.

Forgive us if this sounds a little vague right now, but give us a bit of time to make things come together, we think you might like the results.
